A Fuzz Face and a Big Muff are both fuzz pedals. They do not do the same job.
A Fuzz Face gets dirtier as you play harder. Turn the guitar volume down and it cleans up. A Big Muff stays thick. A chord can feel like a wall of sound.
Shop every fuzz on the fuzz pedals page. If you are still choosing overdrive, distortion, or fuzz, read Overdrive vs Distortion vs Fuzz first. This page is only Fuzz Face versus Big Muff.
Quick Picks
- You want the dirt to follow your guitar volume: Fuzz Face.
- You want long sustain and a huge chord: Big Muff.
- You play bass and want that wall: Deluxe Bass Big Muff.
What a Fuzz Face Does
A Fuzz Face is a simple, old fuzz circuit. It can feel loose and a little wild. Roll the guitar volume down and a lot of the dirt goes away. The note can sound almost clean. Turn the volume up and the fuzz blooms.
That is why people use it for blues and lead lines. You shape the dirt with your hands, not only with the knobs.
The Hendrix ’68 Fuzz Face is that sound. The Band of Gypsys fuzz is the other Hendrix fuzz in that same series. It is a second voice, still meant to be played with the guitar volume.
What a Big Muff Does
A Big Muff does not clean up like a Fuzz Face. The note rings for a long time. Lows and highs stay big, so a power chord feels wide and thick. It is a wall of fuzz, not a soft bloom.
The J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff is a singing version of that wall. The Green Russian Big Muff has more low end and a heavier feel. The classic Big Muff is the straight sustain sound most people mean by the name.
If you play bass, the Deluxe Bass Big Muff is built to keep the low notes clear while the fuzz stays huge.
Which Fuzz the Song Wants
- A line that should breathe when you turn the guitar down: Fuzz Face.
- A riff that has to stay huge in a loud band: Big Muff. Use the Ram’s Head when it should sing. Use the Green Russian when you want more low end.
- You only have room for one fuzz: pick the cleanup or the wall. One of these pedals will not do both jobs.
Then browse fuzz pedals and take the one that sounds like the record in your head.
