These are selected questions and answers from the Ask Me Anything (AMA) that Zach from Mythos Pedals does every Friday on Instagram. Is Mythos going to make a Univibe pedal?
If Mythos does a univibe style pedal, it is going to be a non-traditional univibe. This makes it a harder sell because many guitarists like what they already know, even if the new thing arguably sounds better.
People will ask, “Does it have a bulb in it?” and other questions about how traditional univibes are built.
For now, there are no plans for Mythos to make a univibe. They have other things that they are working on.
Has the Nutube Tubescreamer influenced Mythos into doing a pedal with Nutubes?
Zach has thought about messing around with Nububes for his own edification. Nutubes aren’t expensive but they aren’t cheap either. They are not something Zach would want to put into a normal product.
That said, Zach is open to experimenting with Nutubes on a breadboard.
Are we going to see an Ariel Posen mini Argo pedal?
Maybe. It is something that Zach would love to do but at the same time it could add confusion to the product line. People are already confused between the Argo and Argonaught. To make a mini version of the Argo, that has less features of the Argo in the Argonaught format could work but it could also be more confusing to consumers.
Are new Fender reissue amps worth the price?
The cost is all relative. If it sounds good to you and you can afford it, yes it’s worth it. For Zach, he would save more money and look at getting a Two Rock amp. A Two Rock costs more than the Fender but it sounds magical to Zach’s ears.
Boss VB2W or Diamond vibrato pedal?
Pitch vibrato pedals are not something that Zach is all that interested in. He has played an old VB2 but they aren’t something he has a strong desire for.
Opinions about the Boss OD3.
Zach says the OD3 is fine. He hasn’t spent time with them recently but he has had them over the years.
Zach doesn’t get excited about it. It’s an overdrive that sounds okay to him.
The OD3 uses a cascading transistor stage instead of the usual op-amp overdrive design. It’s kind of like the BD2 but with a different topology.
Thoughts on vintage amps.
It totally depends on the amp. You have to play it to know if it sounds good. Zach has played some old Gibson vintage amps that have sounded great. Then he has played the same model and it sounded awful. You can find a diamond but more often than not, they are rough sounding.
BadCat Black Cat or Dr Z Maz 18 for gigging in small bars and clubs?
Both of those are good options. Zach thinks the Dr Z is far and away one of the best amps for the money. There is nothing really to complain about with the Dr Z. Especially the Maz. Zach gigged with a Maz 18 junior no-reverb 2×12″ combo for years. It was amazing (but it was heavy!). Zach kind of likes the non-reverb models because they have a little more oomph and break up a little sooner. Zach’s amp had an effects loop so he would throw an echo and a reverb in the loop. He would throw an overdrive pedal on the front end and he was set.
